Communities in 20 countries. AMBERSAIL yacht will return to Lithuania, Klaipeda harbor on July 5 at 9 p.m. Lithuanian time. This will be on the eve Mindaugas Day, July 6, the festive celebration of 1000 years of the name of Lithuania appearing in an official chronicle in 1009. Captain Daubaras is inviting Lithuanians throughout the entire world to join the crew of AMBERSAIL in the singing of the Lithuanian anthem at 9 p.m. Lithuanian time, which will be 2:00 p.m. DST in Baltimore and throughout the eastern United States. Captain Daubaras is asking all chapters of the Lithuanian-American Community, Inc. to participate in this triumphant and joyful expression of Lithuanian pride and patriotism. St. Alphonsus Parish Church

Tree of Life: A beautiful gilded Tree of Life is on the vestibule wall of Saint Alphonsus Church. The name of an individual or family to be honored will be inscribed on his or her own gold leaf. Mass will be offered annually for all those whose names appear on the tree or on one of the foundation stones around it. Parishioners, members of the Novena Family and Friends of Saint Alphonsus Church are invited to call Deacon Hugh Mills at (410) 685-6090 for information. All donations from the Tree of Life will be used for church and rectory restorations. Leaf donation is $500.00. Your gift is tax deductible. Payments can be made in installments.

We are still collecting aluminum cans for recycling. This is a fundraiser that doesn't cost you anything, brings the restoration projects a few dollars and helps the environment. You can drop off your clean crushed cans at the church office whenever the office is open. Keep those cans coming. Last year (2007) we were able to earn $372.15 !!

In addition, please continue to remember to bring in your used computer ink or copy machine cartridges as well as old cell phones. This is a fund raiser that doesn't hurt but only helps. On the average, cell phones bring in up to $3.00 per phone. Remember, please continue to bring in those old used cell phones. THANKS TO ALL WHO TAKE PART IN THIS FUNDRAISER. Any questions please call the rectory office. Last year (2007) we earned $38.81 from cell phones!

Every penny helps us reach our goal in making much needed repairs to St. Alphonsus Church. In addition to the above recycling projects, this year we will be collecting the 6 oz. DANNON yogurt cups. We can earn .02 each for them. So eat yogurt - it's good for you - wash out the cups and bring them into the office!

Jonines / Midsummer Festival 6/20/09 The DC-Baltimore Lithuanian Youth Association is planning a traditional St. John's Eve program on June 20th at Riley's Lock, of the Chesapeake and Ohio National Park in Maryland. Participants should gather beginning at 2 p.m. The program will start at about 4 p.m. It will conclude at dark.

A music and crafts festival organized by Fr. Dan Staniskis is being held at the Ukrainian American Cultural Center in Whippany, NJ, on Sunday, July 26th.

We are actively seeking Lithuanian representation. The festival begins at 1 p.m. and continues until approximately 6 p.m. This year the event will be held indoors, so that rain will not be a problem, and everyone can enjoy air-conditioned comfort.

Tables are $30.00. An additional $20 allows you unlimited tables.

BALSSI 2009 June 15 - August 7 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison The Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) offers intensive Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian language courses. BALSSI also offers a cultural enhancement program which introduces students to the rich world of Baltic history and culture. The Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will host the Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) in the summer of 2009 (June 15-August 7, 2009). Elementary Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian language courses will be offered, as well as lectures (in English) on Baltic history and culture and a rich program of cultural events related to the Baltic lands. BALSSI is sponsored by a consortium of eleven US universities and receives additional support from the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies. April 13, 2009 Deadline for BALSSI Fee Remission (Scholarship) and the BALSSI 2009 Application Form Note: After April 13, 2009 we will still accept applications for classes where there are openings available, but we will not open more sections. Program Fee The BALSSI 2009 fee for the 8-week program is $3200.* This includes the cost of UW-Madison assessments for use of campus facilities (student service, recreational facilities, etc.). The fee does not include the cost of textbooks or living expenses (see below). We encourage students to apply for financial aid to attend BALSSI. *Exception: UW-Madison undergraduates who are classified as resident or Minnesota reciprocity for tuition purposes follow the regular UW-Madison summer 2008 fee schedule. Housing, Books, Incidentals The cost of required textbooks will vary between the different languages offered at BALSSI, but students should plan to spend roughly $150.00 for text books. Summer housing and food costs can vary greatly in the Madison campus area, but a frugal student could safely budget $1800.00 for housing and meal costs for the summer. Financial Aid It is our goal to make BALSSI as affordable as possible. BALSSI offers two funding options for applicants. 1. BALSSI FLAS (graduate students only). Graduate students whose home institution is eligible to award FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) summer fellowships are encouraged to apply first to their home institution. A limited number of FLAS awards may be available for UW-Madison and special students for BALSSI 2009. 2. BALSSI Fee Remission (Scholarship). Available to all applicants. Pending confirmation of funding, we anticipate being able to award several fee remissions to qualified applicants. In addition to these internal competitions, we encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to consult with their home department and home university's office of financial aid for any funding they might offer.
